What you can bet on
Football
Three results, not two, and that is where football's extra markets come from. Take the home win, the draw or the away win, Premier League down to National League, August to May. Double chance covers two of those three, and draw no bet returns your stake if it finishes level. The Champions League has its own shape: a league phase through the winter, then a knockout bracket.
Horse Racing
Back a horse to win, or go each way: half your stake on the win, half on it placing, with more places the bigger the field. A small field collapses to win-only, and the place terms are printed above the runners. There is a British or Irish card every day of the year: Flat through the summer, jumps from autumn to spring.
Greyhounds
Most races are settled at the first bend. Meetings run from the afternoon into the night, every day of the week. Back a trap to win, go each way, or take the forecast: the first two dogs home in the right order. A tricast is the first three, in order.
Tennis
Pick the match winner, or bet the games instead: a games handicap starts one player a few games ahead, and total games goes over or under a line. Wimbledon is grass in July, the French Open clay, the Australian Open January, the US Open the end of summer. Between the four there is a tour event to bet on most weeks.
Darts
A leg is one race from 501 down to zero, and the Modus Super Series plays them out every week of the year, best of seven. Back the match winner, a legs handicap, total legs, or most 180s. The World Championship outright, a bet on who lifts the trophy, is priced months ahead.
Snooker
A frame is one game of snooker, and a match is a race to win a set number of them, short early on and far longer by the final. Pick the match winner, or bet the frame count instead: a handicap gives one player a start, total frames goes over or under a line. Four events carry the season: the English Open in September, the UK Championship in late November, the Masters in January and the World Championship at the Crucible each spring.
Table Tennis
A match starts every ten or twenty minutes, from late morning until late at night: the TT Elite Series in Poland, the Setka Cup, the TT Cup, and WTT Champions. Back the winner, a set handicap or total points. Games run to eleven, win by two, so a tight one drags the points total up.
Cricket
Cricket gives you a market as small as one over. Twenty20 barely stops, with a franchise league on somewhere most of the year. On a one-day international, take the match winner, the top batter, the top bowler, total runs, or a line on a single over. Prices move ball by ball once play starts, and a wicket moves them hardest.
Rugby Union
Back the winner, give or take a points handicap, or call total points over or under a line. You get that on every match in the Premiership, the United Rugby Championship, the Top 14 and the Champions Cup, late September to June, and on the Six Nations when it cuts across in February.
Rugby League
League is the higher-scoring code, and the bet is the outright: back a club to lift the Grand Final. Super League opens in February and ends at that final in October. The NRL starts in March and plays out overnight from Australia. Follow both and that is most of the year covered.
Golf
Each way works on a golfer the way it works on a horse, with one difference: the number of places paid moves from one tournament to the next, so read the terms before you stake. Back a player to win the Masters in April, the US Open in June or The Open in July, and the outright is up long before the first tee shot.
Boxing and MMA
UFC cards and professional boxing bills land most weekends. Back the fight winner, or go further: method of victory, round betting, total rounds, and whether the fight goes the distance. Boxing rounds are three minutes, MMA rounds five — the same total means two different fights.
Formula 1
A driver you fancy does not have to win for the bet to land. Take a podium finish, any of the top three, or fastest lap, which settles on one lap and ignores the finishing order. The drivers' and constructors' championships are there as outrights too, over a season from spring to early winter. Or pair two drivers in a head-to-head and take whoever ends up higher.
Basketball
The NBA tips off overnight here, October to April, with the playoffs into June. The Euroleague and college basketball play the same winter, and the WNBA has the summer. Take total points over or under a line when you would rather not pick a side. Otherwise back the winner, or take a points handicap.
American Football
The spread is the bet here. Back a team favoured by a touchdown and it has to win by more than that for your bet to land. If you only care who wins, take the money line, and total points goes over or under a line. The NFL goes from autumn to a February Super Bowl, college football takes the Saturdays, and the CFL has its own season, late spring to a November Grey Cup.
Ice Hockey
Three periods of twenty minutes, then overtime and a shootout if the score is level. Back the match winner and all of that counts; the regulation-time market stops at the end of the third period and prices the draw. You also get a goals handicap and total goals. The NHL is October to June, and the KHL and Germany's DEL start in September and play into the spring.
Esports
Best of three means the first to two maps, and a map is one game on one arena. Pick a team to get there first, or go to the maps: a handicap gives one side a map of a start, and total maps asks whether the series goes the distance. Counter-Strike 2, Valorant and Rainbow Six are the three games you can bet on, all year round.
Before the start, or while it runs
Prices go up days before an event. Take one early and you are backing the match on paper; wait, and you are backing the one in front of you.
Once it starts, the live prices follow the play. A goal, a break of serve, a red card — the numbers move within seconds.
